According to a report in the New York Times, Big Oil/Gas is seeking a shield from liability for the harms they have caused via increasing climate change. The Trump Administration, supported by 100 Republican members of the House are aiding the industry in this effort. They are seeking to stop states such as California, New York, Rhode Island, and Hawaii that are involved in litigation seeking damages for the harms Big Oil/Gas have caused in their states via aggravation of climate change.

As The New York Times article explains, “In addition to food, rent and housing, costs from climate disasters are growing at a frightening pace — now nearly $1 trillion a year by some estimates. This includes costs to local and state governments that have been forced to rebuild infrastructure like roads and water and sewer systems after extreme weather caused by climate change.
